Moving Insurance and Portable Storage Protection in New Hampshire

Before you pack a moving container, make sure you understand how your belongings are protected. Coverage can depend on where the container is, what causes the damage, and which insurance or protection option you select.
At MI-BOX of Central, Southern, and Western New Hampshire, you pack and load your container, and we handle delivery, transportation, and storage as arranged with our moving and storage containers. Understanding the difference between insurance for your belongings and protection for the container itself helps you choose what you need before loading begins.
What moving valuation means
When comparing moving companies, you may see the term “valuation.” Valuation concerns a mover’s financial responsibility for the goods it transports, under the applicable contract and law. Insurance is a separate policy with its own coverage terms.
Traditional movers may offer different levels of valuation protection. Requirements can differ depending on the service and whether the move stays within one state or crosses state lines. A portable storage rental should be reviewed on its own terms. Read the rental agreement and applicable insurance documents to understand the protection available for your particular service.
Contents insurance and the container damage waiver
MI-BOX’s rental agreement requires customers to maintain contents insurance. Customers may provide evidence of their own contents coverage or enroll in the Storage Protectors contents insurance program, subject to the agreement’s requirements.
Storage Protectors contents insurance is a third-party insurance program for eligible property inside the rented container. Coverage depends on the selected limit, deductible, covered causes of loss, exclusions, and other policy requirements. Review your enrollment documents, certificate, and policy to understand what applies.
MI-BOX’s optional container damage waiver addresses your financial responsibility for certain damage to the rented MI-BOX unit. It is a contractual waiver, not an insurance policy, and it does not cover your belongings inside the container.
Selecting a container damage waiver does not automatically insure the contents. Before booking, confirm which products you are selecting and what each one covers. You can also check portable storage prices in NH while you compare options.
Check your existing insurance
Your homeowners, renters, or business policy may provide some coverage for belongings in storage or during a move. Contact your insurance agent and describe your full plan, including:
- Whether the loaded container will remain at your home or business.
- Every address to which the container will be transported, including any MI-BOX storage facility.
- The distance involved and how long your belongings will be in storage.
Ask about coverage limits, deductibles, excluded items, and covered events. Request written confirmation for your circumstances, and follow the rental agreement’s requirements for providing proof of insurance.
Confirm coverage throughout your move
A move may involve loading, pickup, transportation, storage, delivery, and unloading. Ask your insurer or the program administrator which stages are covered, including any lifting or handling of the container.
Transit coverage may have restrictions involving distance, locations, covered events, or additional arrangements required before transportation. Confirm the complete route and any intermediate storage before scheduling the move. Do not assume that ordinary shifting or breakage is covered simply because you have insurance.
Also ask how a claim would be valued. A settlement may account for depreciation or repair costs. Review the policy’s settlement terms before assuming it will pay for a brand-new replacement.

Prepare your belongings before pickup
Good preparation helps reduce avoidable damage and makes it easier to document a loss.
- Photograph your belongings before packing and keep a basic inventory. Record model numbers and retain receipts where available. Keep your records accessible outside the container. Our guide to inventorying your belongings before storage walks through it.
- Use appropriate boxes and protective materials. Distribute weight evenly, fill gaps, and secure furniture against movement. Follow MI-BOX’s loading instructions and weight limits.
- Review prohibited-item rules before packing. Keep cash, jewelry, important documents, and irreplaceable possessions out of the container. Listing an item on an inventory does not override storage restrictions or policy exclusions.
- Close and lock the container as instructed, and see our tips on securing a portable storage container. If you discover damage or a loss, document it promptly and follow the applicable claim-reporting instructions and deadlines.
Discuss your plans with MI-BOX
Whether you are moving, renovating, or making room at home, MI-BOX can help you choose a container size and arrange delivery, transportation, or storage. Ask about moving blankets and straps, and review your rental and protection options before loading.
Questions about whether an insurance policy covers a particular item or situation should go to your insurance agent or the program administrator named in your insurance documents.
