How to Vet a Moving Company Before Your NH Move

You find a mover online, the quote is hundreds less than everyone else, and a friendly rep wants a deposit today to “lock in the date.” Two weeks later a truck you have never heard of shows up, the price has doubled, and your furniture is somewhere on Route 93 as leverage. This is the rogue-mover playbook, and it hits New Hampshire families every busy season, especially on long-distance moves in and out of state. The good news: a few minutes of checking separates the legitimate carriers from the operations you want nowhere near your belongings.

Why Mover Vetting Matters More in 2026

Federal regulators have spent the past year leaning hard on fraudulent movers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) runs an enforcement campaign called Operation Protect Your Move that targets the household-goods carriers and brokers with the worst complaint records in its National Consumer Complaint Database. The pattern regulators keep flagging is the same one above: a lowball estimate, a large upfront deposit, and then inflated charges that hold your shipment hostage until you pay.

None of that is new, but the volume of online “instant quote” brokers has made it easier than ever to book a company that never touches your boxes itself. Knowing how to check a mover is now a basic moving skill, right alongside packing a box.

Step 1: Confirm the Company Is Actually Registered

Any company moving your household goods across state lines must be registered with the FMCSA and carry a USDOT number. That number is your single most useful verification tool.

  • Ask for the company’s USDOT number and legal business name before you discuss anything else.
  • Look it up on the FMCSA’s free Protect Your Move mover search, which shows registration status and complaint history.
  • Cross-check the USDOT number on FMCSA’s SAFER system (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov) and confirm the operating authority for household goods is active, not revoked or pending.
  • Make sure the name on the registration matches the name on your estimate and the truck. Rogue operators often quote under one brand and show up under another.
NH-specific tip: The FMCSA only regulates moves that cross state lines. A move entirely within New Hampshire — say, Manchester to Laconia — falls under state rules, not the federal database, so the USDOT lookup may come up empty for a legitimate local mover. For in-state moves, verify a real local address, read recent Google reviews, and insist on a written estimate instead.

Step 2: Insist on a Real Estimate

A trustworthy mover will not price your move off a few text messages. FMCSA guidance is to get written estimates from several companies, each based on an actual survey of your belongings — in person or by video walkthrough. Compare the numbers and understand what kind of estimate you are signing.

  1. Get it in writing. Never accept a verbal quote. If it is not on paper, it does not exist when the bill arrives.
  2. Require a survey. A quote given without anyone seeing your two-car garage of boxes is a guess designed to be revised upward later.
  3. Know binding vs. non-binding. A non-binding estimate can legally change, but by federal rule you only have to pay 110% of it at delivery to receive your goods — the rest is billed afterward.
  4. Be wary of large deposits. Reputable movers rarely demand a big cash deposit up front, and almost never cash-only.

Red Flags That Signal a Rogue Mover

  • No USDOT number, or one that does not check out. A legitimate interstate mover gives it freely.
  • A quote far below every other bid. The real price comes back at delivery, when your options are gone.
  • Large upfront deposit, cash or wire only. This is how shipments end up held hostage.
  • No in-home or video survey. Serious companies want to see what they are moving.
  • A generic name, no physical address, and a rented truck. Hard to find later means hard to hold accountable.

If something goes wrong on an interstate move, you can file a complaint with the FMCSA’s National Consumer Complaint Database at nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov or by phone at 1-888-368-7238.

Where Portable Storage Fits In

Vetting a mover matters most when a crew takes full custody of your belongings and drives off. Portable storage changes that equation. With MI-BOX, the container comes to your driveway, you load it at your own pace, and it stays in your control the whole time — so the hostage-load scenario simply cannot happen. Many NH families use a container to bridge the gap when their sale and purchase dates do not line up, or to stage a whole-house pack before movers arrive for the heavy items only.

MI-BOX offers three sizes — 8-foot, 16-foot, and 20-foot — so you can size the container to a studio apartment or a four-bedroom home. If you still want a crew for the drive, you have already shrunk the risky part of the move to a single trip. For the bigger picture on crews, see our guide on hiring movers vs. doing it yourself in NH, and if you are relocating across state lines, start with moving to NH from out of state.

The Bottom Line

A legitimate mover is happy to hand over a USDOT number, survey your home, and put a real estimate on paper. The companies that dodge those three things are the ones regulators keep chasing. Spend ten minutes checking before you hand anyone a deposit, and keep as much of your move in your own hands as you reasonably can — that is where a portable container earns its keep.
