What White Mountains Customers Should Know Before They Book

Storage in the White Mountains is shaped by two things that do not apply anywhere else in New Hampshire: a winter that arrives early and stays late, and a housing stock where a large share of the properties are second homes and seasonal rentals rather than year-round residences. Both change how you should plan a container.

Plan around the two shoulder seasons

The practical windows for renovation, cleanout and move projects up here are May into June, and September into October. Before mid-May you are fighting frost heaves and posted weight limits on back roads. After late October you are gambling on the first real snow. Contractors in Lincoln, Bethlehem, Conway and Franconia know this, which is why those windows fill up fast and why a container booked three weeks ahead is a much easier container to place than one booked on Thursday for Monday.

Holiday weekends are their own consideration. If your property is off Route 16 near the North Conway outlets, or on the Route 112 corridor, delivery traffic on a Columbus Day or Presidents Day weekend is genuinely slower. We can work with it. It is just better if you know it going in.

Ski-season rental turnovers

Owners renting near Loon, Cannon, Bretton Woods, Waterville Valley, Attitash or Wildcat run into the same problem every year: the house needs to be set up one way for paying guests and another way for the family. A container on the property is the cheapest way to hold the difference. The same applies to the gear cycle, where bikes, kayaks and deck furniture need to disappear in November and reappear in May, and neither set belongs in a rental closet in between.

For owners running a property as a short-term rental year-round, a container also solves the mid-season deep-clean problem. You can empty a room properly instead of shuffling furniture between bedrooms.

Snow load, plow routes and placement

If a container is wintering on your property, where it sits matters more here than anywhere else in the state. It needs to be clear of any roofline that sheds, positioned so your plow contractor is not forced to pile snow against the doors, and on ground that will still be firm after a January thaw. Gravel is ideal. Plywood under the corners on a soft surface is a reasonable substitute.

Talk to whoever plows your driveway before you pick the spot. A container placed where the plow normally pushes snow will be buried by February, and the whole point of on-site storage is being able to open it.

Steep and narrow access

Mountain driveways are steep, often gravel, and frequently end in a turnaround a truck has to reverse out of. But there is no substitute for telling us what the approach looks like when you book. Grade, surface, overhead branches, a low wire, a tight gate, a culvert that will not take weight. All of it is workable with notice.

A lot of White Mountains renovation work has to happen between guest bookings, which means the demolition-to-finish window is fixed and short. Putting the contents of two bedrooms and a living room into a container on the property rather than trucking them to a storage facility an hour away buys back a day at each end of the job.
