What Great North Woods Customers Should Know

The Great North Woods is the part of our territory where local dispatch stops being a nice feature and becomes the whole point. Coos County covers a lot of ground with long distances between towns, a winter that runs from October into April, and a housing mix heavily weighted toward camps, cabins and seasonal property. A storage company operating out of a depot in another state cannot serve this reliably. We run it out of Littleton, with Tilton as the main facility.

Camps, cabins and the closing-up season

Most of the seasonal work up here happens in a narrow autumn window. Hunting camps, fishing cabins and family places around Pittsburg, the Connecticut Lakes, Errol and Milan need to be emptied of anything that will not survive a Coos County winter, and the practical deadline is well before the deadline further south. By mid-October you are already gambling.

A container on the property solves the problem that makes this difficult: there is usually nowhere else nearby to put things. Rather than hauling gear back down Route 3 to a storage unit two hours away, you load once, on site, and either keep the container there or have us take it to our yard until spring.

Snowmobile and ATV season

The trail economy runs through here, and it drives a specific storage need. Sleds, trailers, ATVs and all the gear that goes with them swap places twice a year, and neither set belongs in the living room in between. Owners who rent their place to riders during the season have the additional problem of needing the house configured one way for guests and another way for family. Mud season is longer here

Frost goes deeper in Coos County and comes out later. The soft-road period that runs mid-March to April further south can stretch well into May up here, and towns post weight limits accordingly. If your property is at the end of a gravel or logging road, May and June are realistically your first good placement window of the year, and September into early October is the last comfortable one.

Tell us what the road and the last stretch of driveway look like when you call. Grade, surface, a culvert that will not take weight, a turnaround a truck has to reverse out of, overhead limbs. The LeveLift system sets the container down flat instead of tilting it off the truck, so we need less room than you would expect, but knowing the constraint in advance is what keeps delivery day uneventful.

Winter placement, seriously considered

If a container is staying through a North Country winter, decide the spot in September. It needs to be well clear of any roofline that sheds, positioned so the plow is not pushing snow against the doors, and on ground that stays firm. Gravel is best; plywood under the corners is a workable substitute. Snow totals here mean a poorly placed container is genuinely unreachable in February, not just inconvenient.

Downsizing and estate work in the mill towns

Berlin, Gorham, Groveton and Lancaster have a lot of long-tenured housing and a steady amount of downsizing and estate work. The pattern we see most is family coming in from out of state with a week to sort a house. A container on site lets you separate what goes now from what needs another visit, without renting a truck or booking a unit an hour away. Take the keep pile, leave the rest packed and locked, and finish on the next trip.

Renovations where the nearest supply house is an hour away

Any renovation up here runs on longer lead times, which means the contents of the rooms being worked on need somewhere to live for weeks rather than days. A container in the driveway also gives a contractor a dry, lockable place to stage materials, which matters when a forgotten box of tile means a two-hour round trip.
